WATCH: Video of dugong in fishing net being released by fisherman in Sarawak, Malaysia.

August 07, 2017

This video, filmed by fisherman, is of a dugong entangled in a fishing net. Watch the fishermen work feverishly to cut the net and release the dugong. Its amazing to see how quickly the dugong swims away after being untangled.

Entanglement in fishing nets is one of the biggest killers of dugong across their range. Many of our partners are working with local fishermen to adjust fishing practices (better nets, keeping close watch on nets) to help save dugongs.

This release is indicative of public awareness about conservation and protection of dugong in Lawas, Sarawak. This public awareness is being delivered by our partners, Sarawak Forestry Corporation, located in Lawas, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Various efforts were undertaken by the MY5 team (Sarawak Forestry Corporation) in raising public awareness on dugong conservation including an eco-rangers programme at local schools and community centres.

Well done!”
